STATE OF CHARGEF1

Who We Are:

We are Rick and Lisette Smit, brother and sister, Motorsport enthusiasts and passionate about innovation and tech.

Our shared interest in Formula 1 inspired us to develop State of Charge F1

With this app, we aim to make race-following and performance analysis more accessible, so fans can enjoy the excitement of Grand Prix even more.

Rick is the driving force behind the app’s development, while Lisette shapes the look and feel, from visuals and copy to colour choices. Together, they combine technical depth with a clean, user-focused design.

Why We Built it:

We believe as a fan we actually need to feel race data to enhance our fan experience, we need clear insights, be provided with up-to-date data and have this accessible to both new and experienced followers.

When the 2026 Formula 1 regulations put a much bigger spotlight on electric deployment and energy recovery, we found it harder to fully grasp the tactical battery battles. We built this app because we felt the need for better access to the battery charge status during the race.

Now the battery strategy increasingly determines when drivers can push, defend, attack or prevent clipping. We wanted to get an easy-to-scan battery simulation, plus the essentials like lap times, speed (km/h), and key race stats. State of Charge helps translate those dynamics into a fast, race-ready view, so a fan can track SoC-performance lap by lap and spot changes in race rhythm faster, see the ‘why’ behind an overtake (or a missed chance) and foresee what that could mean for overtaking opportunities.

How it works:

The battery status shown is modelled simulation driven by real race telemetry data, the actual state of charge data for the Formula 1 cars is not released by any teams.

The simulation is based on a mathematical/physics based model that starts with available data on speed changes calibrated by throttle and brake levels into energy flows for the battery resulting in a practical estimate of the State of Charge. Turning this raw data into something that can be read fast is what makes it useful and provides extra insight without requiring any technical knowledge. The result: deep insight with a smooth, straightforward experience. Our focus is clarity: provide an intuitive indication of energy trends, so the fan can follow the race with more confidence and less complexity.

In short, State of Charge brings battery behaviour and performance signals into one easy to understand view. Follow strategy better, anticipate key moments sooner, and enjoy a Grand prix with more information.

Our Goal:

State of Charge is designed for anyone, whether you’re watching your first Grand Prix or breaking down strategy every Sunday as well as casual viewers and dedicated fans, State of Charge is for followers who need more context during a Grand Prix or sprint.
